Luis Suarez hit a hat-trick as Barcelona easily defeated arch-rivals Real Madrid 5-1 in El Clasico on Sunday evening. Most importantly without key player Lionel Messi who missed the El Clasico due to an arm injury.
Real Madrid’s defense struggled to bear with Barcelona’s attacks. Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring but the Blaugrana outfit were guided by a Luis Suarez hat-trick. Barcelona were somewhat vulnerable early in the second half, but fundamentally drifted over the Galaticos with Arturo Vidal also scoring in the 87th minute to round up the humiliation.
Barcelona dominated possession as the game started, and opened up the scoring in the 11th minute. Ivan Rakitic’s fine pass found sprinter Jordi Alba on the left who found an uncovered Phillipe Coutinho who comfortably slotted into the back of a virtually empty net.
Real Madrid struggled to match the intensity of Barcelona. In the 19th minute, Arthur Melo’s curling 20-yard effort was fantastically saved by Thibaut Courtois to keep Real Madrid in the game, but few minutes later, Barcelona had VAR to thank after Raphael Varane fouled Luis Suarez in the box, as referee Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez reviewed the footage and pointed to the spot. Luis Suarez calmly beat Thibaut Courtois to double Barcelona’s lead in the 30th minute from the spot.
Real Madrid reduced the deficit by a goal when Isco’s cross was aesthetically executed by Marcelo to make it 2-1 early in the second half. Luka Modric hit the post with an effort which would have levelled the game. The game was becoming more entertaining as Luis Suarez hit the post as well after latching onto a Sergi Roberto cross.
Few minutes later, Sergi Roberto’s cross again found Luis Suarez who comfortably headed into the back of the net to make it 3-1 to the Blaugrana club. That goal would have demoralized Real Madrid’s momentum, and this time, a defensive error by Sergio Ramos allowed Sergi Roberto to link up with Luis Suarez once again as the Uruguayan lobbed Thibaut Courtois to complete his hat-trick.
Barcelona substitutes Ousmane Dembele and Arturo Vidal linked up to complete the humiliating victory for the Catalans. The Chilean found the back of the net with a header to make it 5-1 during the late stages of the game.
The big victory will be one for the Catalan fans to remember. More troubles for Julen Lopetegui as his job is on the line.
Barcelona top the table with a point more than second-placed Deportivo Alaves, whilst Real Madrid are winless in FIVE La Liga games. Their loss means they have dropped to 9th on the table, having suffered FOUR losses this season after only 10 games.
