Facebook currently has no plans to ban pages that share fake news, because that will be a way of limiting freedom of speech. This statement was confirmed by the head of Facebook news feed, John Hedgeman, who stated earlier that ”Facebook does not take down false news”. He believes that Facebook was created to be a place where people can have a voice where different publishers have different point of view.
Sara Su, a Facebook specialist for news feed also stated that ”there’s a ton of stuff – conspiracy theories, misleading claims, cherry picking – that we know can be really problematic and it bugs me too. ”But we need to figure out a way to really define that in a clear way, and then figure out what our policy and our product positions are about that”.
Although, Facebook has been working with third parties like Snopes and Associated Press stop fake news from being promoted through ads. Facebook believes that this would make it harder for people who spreads fake news to make money and have large followers.
